Good Hair Habits for Healthy Tresses


Do you compromise on the health of your hair by blow-drying it a little too often just so you can impress your colleagues? Or do you smear oodles of hair wax just so you can look the best even after the party is over? If your answer is yes, then you have a lesson or two to learn. Regular acts such as brushing, washing and blow-drying come with a set of dos and don’ts. We tell you what you are doing right or wrong.

Good hair habits

  1. Combing your hair every day: As basic as it sounds, combing hair helps in distributing the natural oils and makes your hair look shinier and healthier.
  2. Handling your hair carefully when it’s wet: An ideal way to treat wet hair would be to gently squeeze excess water and towel-dry it. Wet hair will snap at the slightest pressure.
  3. Letting your hair breathe: At least for couple of hours in a day. Keep it free from clips, scrunchies, or rubber bands. This is important because the pressure around your head area needs to be released, so that it can regain its normal blood circulation.
  4. Removing all the knots in your tresses before you shampoo: Knotted hair is more likely to break. After the knots have been removed, use a boar bristle brush to remove loose hair. If loose / knotted hair is not removed, they bring along other strands when they fall off.
  5. Cleaning your brushes and combs: Did you know that your hair brush and comb are a breeding ground for germs? Sterilise your hair combs and plastic accessories once in a while. Dunk them in hot water that is infused with a few drops of antiseptic. This goes a lot away in preventing scalp infections.

Bad hair habits

  1. Blow-drying your hair after every wash: This is the most damaging hair treatment. If you must, go in for cold-dry instead of a hot one. Regular blow-drying causes hair to become brittle, and break off.
  2. Applying conditioner on your scalp: Over-conditioning your hair or applying conditioner on the scalp will make your hair look lifeless and greasy. It will even attract a lot of grime and dust if you are an outdoor person. Always start with a small amount of conditioner. That way, if it’s not enough, you can add more.
  3. Not trimming: Hair needs to be pampered with a quick trim to keep split-ends at bay. In case you have bangs or fringes, get a trim when you see them growing out.
  4. Not cleansing: Never let dust settle on your scalp. If your hair feels itchy after a long day in the outdoors, make sure to wash it before you call it a night. Instead of scratching your scalp (that could lead to infections), it is best to wash it with a mild shampoo.
  5. Using soap on your hair: The chemicals in soaps are not meant for hair wash and may damage your natural texture and shine. If you run out of shampoo, tie your hair up in a bun until you find a sachet.
