Top 10 Fall Foliage Travel Destinations

A leaf-peeper’s guide to the top spots for fall foliage travel

Nothing – not sweaters, not the smell of fireplaces, not pumpkin patches, and not apple picking – says “fall” like the blazing red, glimmering gold, and burnt-orange leaves that cover trees and crunch underfoot during the autumn months. Whether you’re practically a professional leaf-peeper or just a casual enthusiast, you’ll need to know where to take in the season’s splendor. Lucky for you, we’ve scouted out the 10 best fall foliage travel destinations – and while some perennially popular places made our list (because it just isn’t possible to do a story on foliage without including New England), we think you’ll be surprised by some of the less-obvious-but-just-as-glorious destinations that did, too. Oh, and no need to fret about when the peak colors will peek out – we’ve done the research for you, as well.

Aspen, Colorado

A Trecker stands on the river in Aspen

A beautiful view of Aspen

While it’s the place to see and be seen every winter, autumn brings a sense of serenity to Aspen – and the golden foliage of the town’s namesake tree along with it. While Colorado’s aspens don’t offer the vibrant fall color spectacle of say, the Northeast, the yellows, golds, and bold oranges that cover the mountainsides here, against a backdrop of intermittent evergreens, are still reason enough for a visit. Mid- to late September is the ideal for fall foliage travel, but with the color change lasting just about a week, timing is everything.

The Catskills, New York

Catskill River View

When the fabled Catskills region, just 100 miles north of New York City, bursts to life with color every autumn, its thickly wooded hillsides are covered by a patchwork of fiery red, glistening golds, and vibrant orange leaves. Dubbed “America’s First Wilderness,” this bountiful and beautiful region harbors a variety of trees – maple, oak, birch, and beech among them – that come into their prime during the last two weeks of September or early to mid-October, the ideal time for fall foliage travel here. Historic towns boast charming B&Bs that make great bases for discovering the family-friendly harvest festivals, farmers’ markets, pick-your-own orchards, crafts fairs, and antique shops that define the region at this time of year.

Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Romantic curves of the river

An autumn day along Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge gives nature lovers endless opportunities to experience the full spectrum of the season’s offerings, whether driving along the Columbia River on the state’s I-84, hiking a variety of trails, or white-water rafting or kayaking. A geological wonder, the gorge itself weaves its way through the Cascade Mountains, forming the border between northern Oregon and southern Washington, and is loaded with lush fir forests and twisted pines, big-leaf maple, cottonwood, Oregon ash, and vine maple trees that show their colors from mid-September to mid-October, the prime time for fall foliage travel here. The area is also known for its dazzling waterfalls, the remarkable 620-foot Multnomah Falls chief among them.

Eastern Townships, Quebec, Canada

Hill top view of the Eastern Townships

Eye chilling scenery of the Eastern Townships

This section of Quebec stretches as far east as Maine’s border, perhaps explaining why some consider the region to resemble neighboring New England, but with the French influence you’d expect of the province. The area has been a summer getaway of the rich for ages, but those in the know head here in fall, a spectacular time to visit local towns like Knowlton and North Hatley. It’s no surprise that the maple leaf is the star of the show here, and visitors can enjoy a fiery display on horseback or on foot, particularly from mid- to late September when the the fall foliage travel season reaches its peak.

Great Smoky Mountains, North Carolina and Tennessee

Exotic view of the Great Smoky Mountains

Cool photographs u can get here

The Great Smoky Mountains are a breathtaking sight, especially in fall when the mountain foliage turns to radiant shades of crimson, orange, and purple. Nestled between North Carolina and Tennessee, the most-visited national park in the United States is home to 100 species of native trees with an awesome display of turning leaves. Peak fall foliage travel is predicted for early October through early November; the most memorable colors coming courtesy of sugar maples, scarlet oaks, sweet gums, red maples, and hickories.

Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

Fisher mens at lake Ozarks

If the sight of brilliantly speckled hillsides and crimson-hued leafy boughs makes you “ooh” and “ah,” the same scene reflected in calm lake waters is bound to intensify your admiration. Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks is one place where the beauty of the fall season, particularly in mid- to late October, is even better, thanks to the area’s wide array of lakeside activities. For truly memorable fall foliage travel, visitors can survey the Lake of the Ozarks State Park’s amazing collection of dogwoods, thong trees, and oak-hickory forests by foot along various hiking trails, or via boat on a unique aquatic trail, complete with markers that explain the sights along the way.

Litchfield Hills, Connecticut

Shadow of trees in water

Located in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains, the Litchfield Hills are a charming New England destination full of country inns, antique shops, and, most importantly come fall, an abundance of trees blazing with color. There are numerous biking and hiking trails in this part of Connecticut, plus opportunities to view the colorful mosaic from the air, via a hot-air balloon ride, or from the water, via canoe on the Housatonic River. Whatever your pleasure, visitors can expect to see maple, oak, aspen, beech, and birch trees, among others, at their peak for fall foliage travel in mid-October.

Lost Maples Natural Area, Texas

Lost Maples Natural Area

Refreshing path ways in Lost Maples

While many think cacti is the main source of green in Texas, the Lone Star State is in fact home to the Lost Maples State Natural Area, which welcomes a beautiful flush come autumn, thanks in no small part to the relatively uncommon Uvalde Bigtooth Maples, whose reddish blush is most spectacular from mid-October through mid-November. Enjoy camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, bird-watching, and more amidst fall’s fiery colors – and plan early because the scarlet splendor that overwhelms the park during this period makes it the busiest time for fall foliage travel.

Ariel View of the beautiful Nature

Though the “Buckeye State’s” eponymous trees lose their leaves closer to summer’s end, Ohio suffers no shortage of scenery come fall, when foliage from numerous buckeye hybrid varieties (like “Autumn Splendor” and “Prairie Torch”) don hues of sharp scarlet and brilliant yellow. In all, some 125 species of hardwood trees (including sassafras, red maple, elm, and dogwood) add to the vivid display, with colors in the southern part of the state peaking just in time for Halloween (while Ohio’s northern boundaries generally peak in the first half of October). Add to that the bounty of the harvest season, with fields of corn, wheat, and barley spilling across acres of pastoral countryside in golden waves. For a bird’s-eye view of the kaleidoscopic landscape, soar above the treetops via hot-air balloon – or through them on a zip-line canopy tour in Hocking Hills. Alternatively, opt for a classic fall foliage travel experience and drive along hundreds of miles of Ohio’s scenic byways, or simply relax under the shade of sycamores in picturesque Holmes County, home to the world’s largest Amish community.

Washington County, Maine

Love like sun rise in the Washington County

Rail Road in the washington county

For hard-core foliage enthusiasts looking to escape the crowds that plague much of New England each fall, Washington County, in Maine, is paradise for a leaf-peeper seeking solitude. Lobster is a way of life, lighthouses dot the coastline, and the sunrise each morning is the first one seen in the United States. Washington County is also the world’s largest producer of blueberries – and you’ll find them infusing everything from pies to pancakes to ice cream. The fall colors range from burnt orange to blazing red to golden yellow on the region’s birch, maple, oak, aspen, and ash trees, and are most vibrant (and ideal for fall foliage travel) from early to mid-October.

Hope you have now planned for the fall foliage trips!!
Have a happy & safe journey :)

America’s Best 24-Hour Hot Spots

Awake at 3 a.m.? Head to these round-the-clock places from Portland to New York.

Whether you’re an insomniac or an early riser, the beauty of a 24/7 spot is you can go—literally—whenever you want. Urban diners that catered to workers on the graveyard shift coming and going from nearby factories at the turn of the 20th century were some of the first establishments in America to stay open around the clock. Since then, all-hours businesses have grown beyond the greasy spoon, providing locals and visitors with a much-needed place to rest, drink, or even go shopping at any hour of the day or night.

With an antidote to restless nights in mind, TravelandLeisure.com searched out 10 of America’s best 24-hour spots. Take the Wilshire Spa in Los Angeles’s Koreatown. This full-service spa keeps its doors open for those who are looking for relaxation, detox, or a full-body scrub at any hour.
The next time you find yourself awake in the wee hours of the morning, don’t get stuck in front of the TV channel-surfing through reruns of The Golden Girls. Instead, celebrate your inner night owl and head out to one of these cool all-hours haunts.

L. L. Bean Flagship Store in Freeport, ME

Located on Main Street since 1917, this popular outdoor sporting goods store went 24/7 in 1951 in order to accommodate hunters who needed to pick up supplies before heading out at dawn. Even if you’re not the outdoors type, the store hours are convenient—especially if you forgot it was Father’s Day.

What to Do at 3 a.m.: Grab a free cup of coffee the staff puts out for late-night shoppers, and relax in peace by the trout-stocked indoor pond.

Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, OR

Voodoo Doughnut

Open round-the-clock since 2003, this offbeat doughnut shop has a treat for every hour of the day. Snack on a Diablos Rex (chocolate cake doughnut with red sprinkles and a vanilla frosting pentagram) during the witching hour, or try a new take on breakfast and order The Loop (raised yeast doughnut topped with Froot Loops). Its sister stores, Voodoo Too (Portland) and Tres (Eugene), recently went 24/7, adding to the nonstop sugar high.

What to Do at 3 a.m.Take the Texas Challenge: if you eat a giant doughnut equal in size to six regular ones within 80 seconds, you get your money back ($3.95).

Mr. Lucky’s 24/7 , Las Vegas

In a nonstop city like Vegas, even the hardiest of partiers have to eat. The never-ending menu at this round-the-clock spot in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino has first-rate diner fare. While standards like French toast and burgers are sure bets, Mr. Lucky’s is famous for its “steak, shrimp and salad special,” only $7.77 (gambler’s luck) and available by request only.

What to Do at 3 a.m.: Even though the food is first-rate, the people-watching alone at this hour is memorable entertainment.

Ron Jon Surf Shop @ Cocoa Beach, FL

After catching an early morning rocket launch at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, don’t go back to sleep. Instead, head down the road to this 52,000-square-foot sand-castle-shaped surf emporium to rent a surfboard and beat the crowds to the beach.

What to Do at 3 a.m.: Buy your inners now; this place is a tourist magnet during daylight hours, when privacy is limited.

Wilshire Spa,Los Angeles

A Relaxed women @ wilshire spa

Before entering this traditional Korean spa in K-Town, patrons must check their self-consciousness at the door. While some may balk at the thought of baring it all in front of strangers, the rejuvenating effects of the spa’s baths and signature Korean full-body scrub are worth the embarrassment. (It has separate facilities for men and women.)

What to Do at 3 a.m.: Go now if you want to avoid crowds.

Hound Dog’s Three Degree Pizza in Columbus, OH

Interior View of Hound dogs pizza

The atmosphere of this pizza joint may not be for everyone—it’s attached to the Ravari Room, a punk rock music venue and bar. Still, make the trip for the pizza and find out why locals revere it. Try a specialty pie like the Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza, or build your own by choosing from two crusts (Smokin’ Joes, a thick crust coated with garlic butter, or regular thin crust), three sauces (regular, spicy, and howlin’ hot), and more than 25 toppings from sauerkraut to hot Cajun links.

What to Do at 3 a.m.: Order a pizza and rock out to whatever jams are on the jukebox.

Gem Spa New York City

A women Getting facial at Gem Spa

Though it may not look like much, this tiny newsstand—located on the corner of St. Mark’s and Second Avenue—is an East Village institution. Gem is a go-to stop for newspapers and magazines, but its true draw is the classic egg creams—made with chocolate or vanilla syrup, seltzer, and milk—served from the old-fashioned soda fountain behind the counter.

What to Do at 3 a.m.: Accidentally poured too much hot sauce on your falafel from Mamoun’s down the street? Rush here for a refreshing vanilla egg cream to cool the burn.

La Mexicana Bakery,Austin

Interior of La Mexicana Bakery

This family-owned bakery serves some of the best authentic Mexican pastries in Austin, like pan de huevo, marranitos, and empanadas, alongside sweets like pecan pralines. Don’t have a sweet tooth? There’s also an all-day breakfast and lunch menu, featuring breakfast tacos and torta sandwiches.

What to Do at 3 a.m.: While most anything on the menu will satisfy late-night munchies, order the specialty: the tres leches, a moist cake soaked in a blend of three kinds of milk.

Jim’s Original,Chicago

Peopele standing out side to shop @ Jims orgingal

Chicago may not be the City That Never Sleeps, but that doesn’t mean Windy City residents don’t need a late-night food fix. Fortunately, Jim’s has been perfecting its founder’s creation, the Maxwell Street Polish Sausage Sandwich, since 1943 (though the original location has moved to Union Avenue). It’s one-third pound smoked pork and beef polish sausage with mustard, onions, and peppers on a hot dog bun. And while it may not sway hard-core Chicago hot dog lovers, the sausage is still a delicious, cheap treat served any time of day.

What to Do at 3 a.m.: Pull up and grab one; there’s no need even to turn off the car.

Fuel City Tacos in Dallas

A row of drinks at Fuel City

Considering it’s attached to a gas station located off Interstate 35E, this humble 24-hour taco stand gets plenty of hype. Back in 2006, Texas Monthly magazine even deemed Fuel City’s picadillo taco the “best taco in Texas.” The affordable street-style tacos are as close to eating authentic Mexican as you can get.

What to Do at 3 a.m.: Order one of each kind of taco it serves—beef and chicken fajita, picadillo, barbacoa, and al pastor—and join in the stand’s perennial late-night party.

Top 10 Spots for Medical Adventure in this World

World Medical Logo

Want it modified, enhanced, drilled out, implanted or just plain alleviated? Would you rather channel most of your hard-earned cash into a holiday? Find an excuse to embark on an exotic adventure with a medicinal tweak from these ten destinations.

1. India
Although the very visible poverty and social ills might scare some off, getting your eyes fixed in this country just might make sense. Eye surgery is just one of the advanced treatments offered in India, where top doctors commandeer the latest technologies and speak faultless English.
Aravind’s Eye Hospitals (www.aravind.org), headquartered in Madurai but with locations around India, hasa remarkable program originally designed to minimize unnecessary blindness; in addition to foreigners, it has helped more than 2.4 million Indians to see in the past 30 years. They treat everything from glaucoma to cataracts and even perform eye replacements. Patients relax in private suites costing $20 per day.

Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bangalore is one of the world’s largest pediatric heart hospitals & It is the brainchild of the renowned cardiac surgeon, Dr. Devi Shetty
Narayana Hrudayalaya also receives patients from outside India, and it has created a record of performing nearly 15,000 surgeries on patients from 25 foreign countries. It is also a renowned center for telemedicine and it offers this service free of cost.Despite helping so many poor patients, it is known for being so efficient, that it has a higher profit margin (7.7% after tax) than most American Private Hospitals (6.9%)

2. Bangkok, Thailand
Back in 1984, British pop singer Murray Head noted that “one night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble”. Oh, but Bangkok makes a hard man so much more than that. Welcome to Thailand, the sex-change capital of the world. Whether you want to re-emerge from the operating room as he or she, Bangkok’s specialist surgeons can perform the task of “gender reassignment” with a few deft scalpel slices. If your medical concerns spring from something other than gender confusion, Thailand is also famous for heart surgery, eye surgery and more. State-of-the-art Bumrungrad International Hospital (www.bumrungrad.com) is a major destination for overseas patients.

3. Beijing, China
Somehow, experiencing acupuncture in its home setting just feels right – especially when you get the balms, oils and smelly unguents of traditional Chinese medicine. In fact, since 1975 Beijing has been home to the International Acupuncture Training Centre, a university for foreign doctors who want to have a stab at it. There are many treatment centres around the city. And, along with this ancient Chinese wisdom, the People’s Republic is pioneering stem cell treatments, offering patients with the gravest conditions a chance to try new treatments banned (usually for political reasons) by their home governments. If you want to be the prick-ee rather than the prick-er, book yourself a treatment at Dongzhimen Hospital (www.dzmhospital.com/en).

4. Colombia
North Americans and others head to Colombia for complex treatments performed by crack doctors at bargain rates. Cities such as Bogotá, Colombia’s capital, offer a wide variety of medical treatments and operations. Specialities in Colombia include joint surgeries, and getting a hip replaced or “resurfaced” costs one-fifth of the cost of US hospitals, while the prosthetics used are of high international quality. Many Colombian doctors are foreign trained as well. Colombia is also often visited for procedures that range from dentistry and cosmetic surgery to open-heart surgery. December to March is Bogotá’s dry season; the city is perched 2,600m above sea level, so be sure to allow a couple of days to acclimatise when you arrive.

5. Nuuk, Greenland
If you happen to be in Greenland and, say, a polar bear bites your arm off, do not just leave it there! Dronning Ingrids Hospital, in the southwestern capital of Nuuk , is the main hospital on this frigid maritime landmass, and is specially distinguished for performing special operations requiring very low temperatures (such as reattaching severed limbs). Built in 1954, the Dronning Ingrids does not need air-conditioning, and the heating system prevents any contaminated airflow. You will quickly feel good as new when recovering on this sparsely populated island stuck unpromisingly between Canada and Iceland. The air is clean and, er, invigorating, and the seafood is excellent. Charter a boat with an English-speaking skipper – see the city from a different angle before sailing over the deserted horizon.

6. Tehran, Iran
How does Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad keep up such a fierce stare? We are not implying anything, but plastic surgery in Tehran is indeed big business these days. Nose jobs are seen as especially important, interestingly enough. For Muslim women in the Islamic Republic, a nose is often one of the few body parts to be visible; however, Iranian men too think that improvising off a classic Persian nose can make them somehow more seductive. Iranian plastic surgeons do lifts, chin implants, tummy tucks and almost everything else tha is done in the West, but for less. Make sure you check the latest visa situation (www.iranianvisa.com).

7. Cuba
If you arrive on a Communist-run island and have your passport and money confiscated by the authorities, one might say it just comes with the territory – or, you might actually be at Cuba’s addiction rehabilitation clinics, where it is often standard procedure. Frequented by ordinary folks and famous figures too (Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona was one such client), Cuba’s rehab villas are renowned for their professional service and effectiveness – along with a price around half of that in the US. Rehab here mixes balmy island living with no-nonsense regimes for keeping you stone-cold sober in seclusion, with the assistance of trained psychologists, doctors, sociologists and – of course – Caribbean breezes from the beach. If you want to follow in Maradona’s footsteps you can book a stint of private rehab through an operator such as Grupo Cubanacan.

8. Skopje, Macedonia
For a decade, UN and NATO employees in the Balkans, as well as expats, have hit the Macedonian capital for affordable, high-quality dental work. Macedonian dentists are generally well trained, and many speak English. Some even have webcams, so you can get the added excitement of watching your mouth being drilled too. Everything from check-ups and fillings to implant work and cosmetic dentistry is available, and at prices significantly less than in Western Europe or North America. Skopje’s conveniently situated en route for travellers passing through Southeastern Europe, and offers a mix of history and nightlife. Flash your new smile in one of Skopje’s numerous cafes, where the in-crowd love to be seen.

9. Israel
Some of the world’s best medical treatment is found in Israel, and the country’s state-of-the-art facilities have made it the destination of choice for many medical tourists. Although it is generally not a bargain, the services are wide and the skill level very high. Everything from IVF fertilisation to advanced cancer therapy is done here. Plus, the salt and unique nutrients in Israel’s Dead Sea make this a much-visited place for those with various skin problems, as well as rheumatologic and lung conditions – and floating effortlessly on this super-saline body of water, amazingly situated below sea level, is a therapeutic experience in itself. For the ultimate therapeutic treatment, slap on some Dead Sea gunk, available at many of the area’s hotels, and give yourself an invigorating mud pack.

10. Malaysia
Mix procedures with pleasures in Malaysia, another leading destination for medical travellers. Places like the beach resort town of Penang, on the country’s northwestern coast, are popular for breast-enhancement surgery, and package-tour companies even offer such trips. It is good that a recuperative beach vacation is included, since doctors warn that long plane journeys after surgery can cause thrombosis. The dynamic capital, Kuala Lumpur, home to the Petronas Towers – some 451.9m high – is where more complex procedures (such as brain surgery for epilepsy) are performed. Some medical procedures at the Petronas Towers might help with epilepsy, but they will do nothing for vertigo sufferers who choose to access the 41st-floor skybridge.

vacation in cancun,mexico

Mexico’s tourism industry underwent rapid growth during the 1980s, made possible by enthusiastic foreign investment. Large hotels began to flourish – offering complete services and amenities, abounding in luxury and exclusivity. This also applied to shopping centers, which started incorporating some of the finest boutiques, jewelers and restaurants. These factors boosted the area’s status. Already considered a paradise of sun and sea for the color of its waters, the delicate beauty of its powdered sand beaches and the exuberant vegetation of its ecological reserves, Cancún was still improving its reputation.

One of the beautiful View of Mexico

Cancún can be divided into three main areas: The Hotel District, the Town and the Ecological Reserve, blessed with incredible lakes and mangrove swamps.

Hotel District

The Hotel District is comprised of the so-called gran turismo hotels (four-and five-star luxury hotels). Hotels and shopping centers are distributed along the main Boulevard Kuculkán, which runs the length of the 21-kilometer (13-mile) island. This district undoubtedly generates the greatest revenue and has the greatest economic impact on the nation, as compared to the rest of the state. This area is where the trendiest, most popular discos, the finest international restaurants and the largest entertainment venues are situated.

Town of Cancún

Arial View of Town of Cancun,Mexico

The Town of Cancún changes the scenery, albeit not too drastically. Peaceful provincial life here is more picturesque, folkloric and the simplicity of some of the shops provides a stark contrast to the million-dollar hotel chains. Restaurants in this district serve typical local food and snacks, providing a real opportunity to taste some genuine homemade Mexican dishes. There are also a lot of shopping opportunities in town. For additional entertainment, theaters and cinemas are located on the main streets.

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

A view of Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

Greenery maintained @ Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

Last, but certainly not least, the third district is in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve , where nature still reigns supreme in the history of this area. Occupying hundreds of kilometers, it constitutes Mexico’s largest genuine ecosystem, home to a diverse number of plant and animal species. The government and non-profit organizations do their best to preserve this area as a wildlife refuge containing many species in danger of extinction.

Archaeological sites can be found in the vicinity, extending towards the four cardinal points. Structures tell the history of the settlements of the Mayan people on this peninsula, and just about every rock reveals traces of the historical and cultural legacy which these inhabitants left behind.

Entrance View of District Hotel

Cancún combines the elegance and gamut of entertainment choices in its Hotel District, the traditions and serenity of its pueblo, and the natural beauty of its ecological reserve, coral reef and history of its peoples. From a city brimming with all of this, what else could you ask for?
